Using AI can create space for higher-level work, but only when critical thinking comes first. Success depends on more than the tools you use, explains Kathleen Drum
We often talk about Assistants needing to use their critical thinking skills: their ability to analyse information objectively, evaluate evidence, and refute assumptions. To go beyond the surface and make reasoned judgements rather than accepting the status quo. But where does using AI fit into this?
Ayanna Castro, Corinne Hoisington, and Melissa Peoples each make the case that AI best supports your project or workflow after that critical thinking has taken place: when the structure is clear, process steps have been mapped out and bottlenecks removed. Without that framework you can end up with vague outputs or, even worse, AI hallucinations, as it struggles to understand what you need. Get it right and that’s when synergy occurs: human intelligence enhanced by AI to create a better outcome.
Used well, AI gives you your thinking time back and allows you to spend that time developing other skills. Our fascinating piece by Jo Living uses the poker table as a representation of the boardroom table, showcasing essential business skills such as negotiation, navigating risk and reward, and performing under pressure. As Jo says, “Poker teaches you that success rarely comes from playing every hand perfectly. It comes from reading the room, managing pressure and understanding people. Executive Assistants do this every day.” That is where the real synergy lies; technology supports the hand you play, but judgement and emotional intelligence are what shape the outcome. Combined thoughtfully, they can help you raise your visibility, create greater impact, and showcase your operational excellence.
