We asked Assistants further on in their career what advice they would give their younger selves; Niklas Cerovina shares some valuable insights with us

When did your role first feel strategic rather than reactive? What would you do to reach that moment earlier?

My role felt strategic from day one. My executive was very clear that this partnership was built on shared strengths and high‑impact collaboration. Looking back, I would have communicated my capabilities even earlier in my career so I could step into strategic work with confidence right away.

What myth about being a “good EA” did you have to unlearn, and how would you explain the reality to your younger self?

I had to unlearn the outdated idea that EAs are primarily task‑based secretaries. The modern EA is a strategic partner with insight, influence, and the ability to move an organisation forward. I would tell my younger self: your role is far bigger than tasks; you bring unique skills to the table.

What common “nice to have” did you discover is non-negotiable?

Communication and negotiation skills are non‑negotiable. EAs often make the impossible possible through clear communication, relationship management, and the ability to align diverse stakeholders.

What boundary would you set in week one today, and what exact words would you use?

I would clearly define the work I deliver best, and what falls outside the scope of a modern EA. My wording would be “I’m happy to guide you on how to handle this yourself. Let me show you the most efficient way,” delivered with warmth and kindness.

What evidence of impact should your younger self start collecting in month one?

Document the tangible difference you make for your executive: reductions in stress, improved structure, clearer prioritisation, and the outcomes of meaningful dialogues. Impact often shows up in efficiency, clarity, and joy for the work at hand.

What financial or commercial concept would you learn first to level up sooner?

Return on investment (ROI), especially the return on investment of your executive’s time. Once you understand the value created by where time is spent, priorities become clearer, your decision‑making ability sharpens, and many situations become far easier to navigate.

What is one workflow you would automate from the start and with which tool?

I would automate drafting responses to high volumes of external queries using Copilot. Looking ahead, AI calendar management automation will be transformative for strategic EAs. AI will help us to do less of the boring tasks and more of what we enjoy.

What is a red flag you would act on sooner?

I would act sooner when expectations or responsibilities become unclear. Lack of clarity at the start often leads to inefficiencies later. Addressing it early strengthens trust and keeps the partnership strong.

If you could only give one piece of advice to your year-one self, what is it?

Progress over perfection: growth comes from momentum, learning, and showing up consistently. You’re doing well, keep at it!
