Nicholas Rossman, Programme Director at the Mobile Ecosystem Forum (MEF), explains what’s behind the growing movement to sidestep smartphones

It may be surprising, but the seemingly antiquated “basic phone” is experiencing a revival. Yes, smartphones continue to dominate the mobile phone market, but a growing number of consumers are opting for simpler devices. Could we really be heading for a future where the smartphone falls out of fashion? What’s driving this change?

The “Basic Phone” Phenomenon

A basic phone is a mobile device primarily designed for calling and text messaging, often valued for its long battery life and durable design. This renewed interest in basic phones is driven by many factors, including nostalgia for a simpler technological era, a desire to reduce screen time and digital distractions, growing concerns about smartphone addiction, and increased worries about data privacy.

Interestingly, this trend is emerging amidst a global shift towards premium smartphones. In 2023, premium smartphones were predicted to account for one-fourth of global smartphone sales and 60% of global smartphone revenue. However, in the US, basic phone sales were projected to reach 2.8 million units in 2023, with continued demand expected in 2024. While this represents a small fraction of the overall handset market (around 2%), it signifies a notable shift in consumer preferences, particularly among younger generations. Gen Z adults, in particular, are increasingly keen to explore alternatives to smartphones.

Declining Trust

The resurgence of “basic phones” coincides with increasing concerns about consumer trust in mobile devices. Users are becoming more aware of the potential risks associated with smartphones, including data privacy issues, security breaches, and the addictive nature of apps and social media.

A 2022 Deloitte survey revealed that nearly 60% of respondents worry about their devices being vulnerable to security breaches and organizations tracking them through their devices. This distrust is further fuelled by the lack of transparency regarding data collection practices and the increasing complexity of mobile operating systems.

Digital Wellbeing

Excessive smartphone use has been linked to increased stress, anxiety, and depression. “Basic phones” offer a way to disconnect from the constant barrage of notifications and the pressure to be constantly connected, promoting a calmer and more focused mind. One user who switched to a basic phone reported a 70% reduction in their screen addiction, highlighting the potential for these devices to help individuals regain control over their digital habits.

Digital Detox

Many individuals are seeking ways to reduce their screen time and engage more fully with the real world. “Basic phones” provide a means to escape the “always-on” mentality and reclaim control. This desire for a digital detox is particularly relevant for Gen Z, who have an average watch time of 7.2 hours per day on their devices.

Cost of Living

Basic phones are significantly more affordable than smartphones, both in terms of the initial purchase price and ongoing costs associated with data plans. In an economy where many people are looking to make savings on regular bills, this makes them an attractive option for budget-conscious consumers.

Made to Last

“Basic phones” are known for their robust build and long battery life. They can withstand drops and bumps, and their batteries can last for days or even weeks on a single charge. Ideal for outdoor activities and emergencies, it frees users from “charge anxiety”.

Conclusion

The long-term impact of the “basic phone” trend remains to be seen. However, it is clear that this has the potential to reshape the mobile phone market and influence the way we interact with technology in the years to come. By promoting digital wellbeing, privacy, and a more mindful approach to technology use, the resurgence of “basic phones” may ultimately contribute to a healthier, more balanced relationship between humans and technology.
